The photos were taken by Emily Myallis, a diaconal minister in the ELCA who also serves at Zion's Lutheran.

This website and travel to Greece was made possible by a grant from the Fund for Theological Education, which provides grants to assist the education and formation of Christian  leaders from numerous denominations.

Bible quotes are taken from the New Revised Standard Version, unless cites otherwise.

The above photo of Greece comes from NASA; The icon of Saint Paul comes from George Mitrevski's website

Abaton

The Abaton served as the sleep-house where people would receive their healing from the god Asklepius.  After purifying themselves with a bath and sacrificing an animal in the temple, the person would fall asleep and Asklepius would approach them in a dream.  In later times the priests would interpret the dreams, basically offering medical advice.  The priests here became doctors having scene so many patients!

How is this significant for understanding the world of Paul?

The Abaton was the center of the healing compound at Epidauros.  For more on the relationship between Asklepius and Christian beliefs, go to Asklepius' Temple or the Healing Records.
